The 250cc 4-stroke revolution continues to evolve, now at a faster pace than ever, and the result is a 2006 crop of MX Lites that has something for everyone. It used to be that racing the 125cc class meant an ongoing search for horsepower. Whether the rider was a top professional or a local beginner, one-two-fives everywhere were looking for more ponies across the board. Nowadays the 125cc class, or rather the AMA Lites, is simply looking for an actual 2-stroke still among the ranks. Yamaha's introduction of the YZ250F was the beginning of the end for 125s, and the blue company isn't cutting the remaining tiddlers any slack in 2006.

After flying halfway around the globe to check out the new aluminum-framed Yamaha four-strokes in Japan back in April, I was anxious to finally get to throw a leg over one of the sleek new bikes. Along with TransWorld Motocross test rider (and 14th place finisher at Glen Helen!) Mike Sleeter, I boarded a plane bound for Reno, Nevada, to test the new YZ250F at the renowned Honeylake MX facility. Yamaha’s Terry Beal, Steve Butler and Doug Dubach greeted us the next morning and gave us a brief technical rundown of all the updates on the new machine.
