    Anyone who has traveled on a motorcycle understands the touring conundrum: Fun and nimble motorcycle loaded down with only minimal luggage; or, a truckish touring rig that can dissuade its rider from taking the squiggly lines on a map.

    All that's really needed for a sport-touring trip is a tank bag slapped on a sportbike, perhaps augmented by a couple of soft saddlebags for a longer trip.

    For a while I owned an ST1100, and every year as Big Red's new models and updates were announced, the speculation would begin amongst the denizens of the ST1100 mailing list. Half wish list and half rumour mill (a friend of a friend's second cousin works at Honda and...) the faithful would speculate on Honda's next generation of sport-tourer and successor to the venerable ST1100. The new ST would be lighter, have improved ABS, an adjustable wind screen, it would handle better, it would keep or better the current bike's massive tank range, it would be closer to the VFR... it went on and on.

    In just its first year of production, the 2003 Yamaha FJR1300 scooped up a remarkable 17.7% share of the Sport-Touring segment in America. Its blend of big power and long-haul comfort has gained crossover popularity with both the sport and touring markets.
    The FJR was the best-selling Japanese sport-tourer last year (thanks in part to the late arrival of Honda's cushier but more expensive ST1300), and Yamaha has made some revisions to its '04 model to amplify both the sport and touring parts of its equation.
