There is an Indian proverb, "Do not blame God for having created the tiger, but thank him for not having given it wings." That's because the tiger is a super or apex predator sitting at the top-end of the food, chain secure, unchallenged and feared. Triumph's outgoing Tiger 955i, however, was nothing of the sort. It may have been a likable soft mishmash of adventure and touring aspirations, but one would never describe it as being super, let alone a predator. Now, there's Triumph's new 1050 Tiger and you'll not find it padding around the woods... Instead it's carving a niche for itself in the motorcycling ecology.

Last year's Adventure Touring comparo was the ultimate tale of dust and mud as our motley crew set about on a monstrous journey to the edge of the Grand Canyon. That voyage was characterized by long days in the saddle, mile after mile of sun-baked terrain, cold nights, intermittent thunderstorms and minor crashes. Triumph's Tiger has been long overdue for an upgrade.

Triumph has abandoned the quasi dual purpose approach of the previous Tiger and reintroduced the latest model as a much more capable sporting machine.

The latest version that was recently launched sports a 1050 triple engine, new chassis and brand new styling.

The Tiger has come a long way over the last 14 years. Tracing its heritage back to 1993 when Triumph was still using modular frames and carbureted engines, it became fuel injected in 1999 and hasn't looked back.

Styled to look like the Paris/Dakar off-road racing bikes of the '80s, with the large gas tank and aggressive twin-headlight front fairing, it was a very enjoyable and well-rounded machine.
