The literbike class of sportbikes is one of the most hotly contested genres in motorcycling, even somewhat overshadowing the raging fury of the 600cc supersport category that has traditionally been the most competitive.
All the attention on the literbikes is driven by sales numbers, so the class is obviously appealing to a larger audience. This is partly due to four-cylinder Superbikes having had their displacement increased to 1000cc instead of the former 750cc, as evidenced by the market falling out for 750s except for the venerable GSX-R750 that soldiers on without any competition.

Smaller, lighter and more powerful: These are the basic tenets of sportbike engineering.
Unless, that is, you're Kawasaki and you need to build the best possible race platform for competition while transforming an unbridled street beast into a more tractable machine for mere mortals.
So, although the nearly all-new ZX-10R is longer and heavier and has no claimed increase in power, the big Zixxer turns out to be an even better track tool and street machine than before.

Yes, as you've guessed from the above comment, Herself took Kawasaki's 2006 litre-class sports flagship to work, 72km there and back of heavy traffic and tight corners, and found it surprisingly wieldy for a bike that's supposedly even more racetrack-orientated than its predecessor.

Most of the changes to the engine have focused on making the power delivery more linear, with a revised cylinder head, inlet valves reduced 1mm to 30mm diameter, new pistons and fuel injectors and a revised crankshaft balance factor.

Honda and Kawasaki, to stay ahead in the crazy, mine's-better-than-yours superbike world, have each sharpened their litre-class sport flagships and both bikes are now in South Africa.
The Kawasaki ZX-10R gets new styling along with technical tweaks to improve its lap times. Its output stays the same at 128.7kW and 115Nm for a dry weight of 170kg but the 998cc engine's been revised to produce better firepower across the rev range.

I was totally hoodwinked here, after getting an invite to ride the 2006 Kawasaki ZX10R at the USA press intro, my first reaction was to check my review of the first 2004 rendition. I really liked that bike then and I didn't mind writing about it. The bike consequently scored high in the open-class shoot out that I did and that model also garnered some impressive class wins in other publications so I wasn't completely wrong.
