Life must be tough for middleweight Twins. Despite all they have to offer, they still get tagged with the "beginner bike" label. While many of these bikes may be bought by first-time motorcyclists and buying one of these rather than, say, a GSX-R1000 or ZX-10 as your first ride displays uncommon common sense, the label is still somewhat insulting. Even though it does imply that you're doing something pretty cool - learning to ride a motorcycle - a certain stigma remains. After all, how many people would walk proudly into their local pharmacy and ask the cute cashier where to find the trainer condoms?

Mechanically the Kawasaki ER-6f is no more than an ER-6n streetbike fully clothed; the 53kW, 649cc parallel twin engine is the same, as are the straightforward, no-tricks front end, offset rear monoshock and stubby, underslung tailpipe.
But the tall, slim fairing with its conservative lines, 1990's-style double headlight (borrowed from the Z1000) and analogue instrument panel invest the bike with a totally different persona to its in-your-face naked sibling, helped by a few neat styling cues such as a two-tone seat that makes the ER-6f look like a single-seater at first glance.

So we have a newbie to the welterweight division, a new model that’s to go head to head with the current champ, Suzuki’s super-V, the SV650. The bike is the Ninja 650R, we (I have a mouse in my pocket) got to spend a day on Kawasaki’s new parallel twin to see if it’s up to the task. The venue being some of the nicest, cleanest twisties in and around the Palomar canyons, east of San Diego.
