For 2010, Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati has released the successor to its tried-and-true motorcycling Swiss Army knife: The 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200. Despite using the same name as before, the new generation machine expands upon its original concept by utilizing a multitude of imaginative technologies that we’ve never seen on a Ducati, or any other production street bike. This allows it to achieve higher levels of performance, comfort and, above all, practicality. To discover some of its potential, Ducati invited MotoUSA to ride the new machine in one of Mother Nature’s most rugged, diverse, and ultimately magnificent proving grounds: The Canary Island’s Lanzarote, located west of the Moroccan coast.

It hardly needs an introduction, does it? The Ducati Multistrada is the most hotly anticipated, intensely discussed new motorcycle since… okay, since the Honda VFR1200F.
That was only a very short while ago, but still both of these machines have generated an exceptional amount of interest. The VFR though was hung out to dry by Honda’s own publicity when it didn’t quite live up the over-inflated expectations, on top of which it failed in some key points in its quest to be all bikes to all men. All it takes, after all, is one deal-breaker like the VFR’s inadequate tank range, and the rest ceases to matter.

De nieuwe Ducati Multistrada 1200 werd begin 2010 voor het eerst aan het publiek getoond. De visuele verschillen ten opzichte van het vorige model waren significant te noemen; de twee uitlaten onder de buddyseat hebben plaatsgemaakt voor twee korte, sportieve uitlaatpijpen, een meer comfortabele en royale zit voor zowel de rijder als de passagier, strakker bodywork, een high-tech boordcomputer, een met de hand verstelbaar ruitje en een nieuwe neus. Een aantal zaken zijn gebleven, zoals een buizenframe, de zeer fraaie enkelzijdige swingarm met het 10-spaken 17 inch achterwiel en de Brembo rempartij.

Laat ons meteen toegeven gaan: deze test was puur genieten en de Multistrada heeft, buiten zijn polyvalente karakter, niets meer te maken met het de eerste Multistrada.
