    The engine is thrumming, the throttle is pegged, and I’m in the best areo-tuck 6’2” 200lbs of editorial content can manage. The windscreen begins to vibe a bit.     Somewhere in Sicily's twisty mountain switchbacks, surrounded by rain and snow, the newest member of Ducati's Multistrada family was happily shrugging off the challenging conditions. In fact, I was having a blast on this two-wheeled equivalent of a cute-ute SUV.

    In the 24 hours it took to get from my house to Ducati's hotel in Sicily I had plenty of time to think about this new Italian all-rounder, and I must admit my expectations for the baby Multistrada weren't very high.

    Ducati's 620 Multistrada Dark is the nearest thing the Bologna firm has to an entry-level motorcycle. It's a derivative of the amazingly practical Multistrada 1000DS, powered by the smallest version of the air-cooled SS engine that traces its ancestry to the 1977 Pantah.
    It's a well-proven, torquey L-twin that pulls strongly from 4000rpm through to its power peak, a claimed 45.4kW at 9400rpm, so strongly in fact that most riders come back from their first outing on it saying: "I can't believe it's a 600."
